OBD-II P0300 — Random / Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected

The ECU detected misfires on several cylinders without a single identifiable source.

Severity: highGasoline engines with OBD-II (1996+)VW · BMW · Ford · Toyota · Renault · Fiat

Technical meaning

The engine control unit counts crankshaft speed irregularities caused by cylinders that fail to fire.

Symptoms

  • Rough idle and shaking at traffic lights
  • Loss of power when accelerating
  • Flashing check-engine light
  • Increased fuel consumption

Most likely causes

  1. 1Worn spark plugs or cracked ignition coils (most common)
  2. 2Vacuum leak or a cracked intake hose after the MAF sensor
  3. 3Low fuel pressure from a clogged filter or failing pump

How to fix it

  1. 1Read and write down all stored codes — never clear them before noting freeze-frame data.
  2. 2Inspect spark plugs: replace if the electrode is worn or the ceramic is cracked.
  3. 3Swap the ignition coil of the misfiring cylinder to another cylinder; if the misfire follows, replace the coil.
  4. 4Check the intake hoses and PCV valve for cracks and unmetered air.
  5. 5Measure fuel pressure at the rail; a value below spec points to pump or filter.
  6. 6If the misfire stays on all cylinders, test compression and check timing.
  7. 7Clear the code with the ELM327 sequence below and drive a full cycle to confirm the repair.
ELM327 / OBD-II
ATZ # ELM327 reset
ATE0 # echo off
ATL0 # linefeeds off
0100 # supported PIDs
03 # read stored DTCs
04 # clear DTCs / MIL reset

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to drive with P0300?
Only for a short distance. A misfire dumps raw fuel into the catalytic converter and can destroy it within minutes.
Does clearing P0300 fix the car?
No. Clearing only erases the code; the misfire returns as soon as the ECU completes its monitor again.
